Whether you’re a designer, developer, or application developer, make sure you’ve done this checklist before considering your app design has been done well.
Error # 1. Not thinking about the application flow
One of the goals of the app design is to impress its user. Indeed, the latter will first see the visual side of the application. Then, it will start to “move in the app” to discover its functionalities. It is therefore quite normal that starting to work on the app design, we wonder almost instantly how to make it visually attractive. And this is precisely the first mistake to be avoided.
Think first about the workflow of the application, that is, the organization of the essential elements of each screen. It is also necessary to determine how they will be interrelated. Once the structure is as simple as possible, you can start adding purely decorative elements.
To simplify the workflow, it is recommended that the functional elements, such as the menu, be placed at the top of the screen and left in view, rather than hidden under the drop-down menus.
Error # 2. Make the same app design for multiple platforms
The interfaces of the operating systems differ from each other. Android, for example, has the back button on its devices, while in iOS it is necessary to think of integrating it into each screen of the application. This means that the designs for these two operating systems will not be identical. Make sure to take into account all the differences between the OS, but also between the different types of devices: the application designed for the smartphone is not adapted “by default” to the tablet.
Error # 3. Require the user to sign up when it is not really necessary
Registration forms, even the simplest ones, act on many mobile users as a repellent. Some of them do not want to share their personal data, even though they do not even know who is behind the application; others are in a hurry and do not want to waste their time signing up just to see if the app is really worth it.
If your application, where at least part of it, can be used without prior registration, do not ask the user to register immediately after the first launch of the app. Give her an opportunity to discover it before making the decision to register.
However, if your application requires registration, consider putting on its download page clear screenshots to explain all its features.
Error # 4. Forget application onboarding
If a mobile user has downloaded your app, it does not mean that they want to use it. On the contrary, 80% of mobile applications are abandoned after their first launch. Sometimes these are mobile applications with high potential that the user simply did not understand the operation. In this regard, you should know that your app has only a few minutes to convince the user of its utility. The best solution is to explain how to use it.
To do this, you can set up an onboarding presentation, a kind of initial tutorial. And since mobile users lack patience, make sure that the presentation is not long.
Error # 5. Do not give priority to the UX
A beautiful graphics will not help you to retain users if your mobile application is not easy to use. Make sure that the designer you hire to help you achieve your project has user experience skills.
Error # 6. Forget the consistency of your app design
What does “app design consistency” mean? It is the organization of all elements of the application that facilitates their identification by the user. In a city, for example, night buses will be identified by the letter N, for example N 23. Thus, by consulting the plan, one never risks to confuse them with the other buses. A mobile application must also have a certain set of symbols. If you choose to label a tab, for example, “Pressroom”, repeat the same title each time you talk about it. Do not change all of a sudden to say “Press Room”. It seems obvious to you that it is the same thing, but some users will be confused.
Error # 7. Putting too many features
An average user feels lost when he discovers that there are more … three features in the application he just downloaded. In order not to despair, it should only offer absolutely essential functionalities. If the minimal application likes it, it will go into the comments section to ask you to add options that seem interesting.
Error # 8. Using animations to explain how the application works
Few users appreciate animations in mobile applications. They do not allow you to take a look at the whole message to quickly find what you need. This is why it is best to use static images and text.
Mistake # 9. Do not ask the opinions of others
The operation of your application may seem clear and simple, but what would the potential users say? Try to collect as many opinions as possible. Ask for help to family, friends, even communities of beta testers that you can easily find on the web.
Error # 10. Buttons and call-to-action too small
Some mobile devices do not allow the screen to be zoomed. Imagine the frustration of the user who, each time he wants to open a link, opens by accident another. Ensure that all interactive elements of the application are large. It is also necessary to keep wide spaces between them.
Error # 11. Let the user wait
If some parts of your app take a long time to load, it is recommended to put a small progress bar to inform the user. Otherwise, the user might think that the application has bugged.
Error # 12. Be Afraid of White Spaces
Nowadays, while minimalist styles have become established in the app design, it is better not to put enough elements on the screen than to put too much. Stretch texts and remove purely decorative elements to aerate the pages. Do not be afraid of empty spaces – users will appreciate the simplicity and lightness of your app design.
